Ethan – From Multi-Utility Apprentice to Multi-Utility Design Engineer

Ethan 2

Ethan’s journey with Aptus began when his father, who works for Aptus, introduced him to the company’s flagship Multi-Utility Apprenticeship Training Scheme. He enlisted in 2019 and qualified in 2021 as one of an award-winning cohort, achieving some of the most impressive results in the country. Now training as a Multi-Utility Design Engineer, Ethan’s apprenticeship has shaped his career ambitions and given him a clear path forward.

Starting the Apprenticeship Journey

Ethan didn’t have a set career plan, but the apprenticeship gave him hands-on experience, requiring him to be adaptable and flexible. Working daily with different operational teams and industry professionals meant making a strong first impression each time, pushing him to grow both professionally and personally.

Influential Role Model

Ethan’s father joined Aptus in 2014 as Multi-Utility Operative Supervisor, earning promotion into project management and advancing to Multi-Utility Project Delivery Manager in March 2022. Seeing his father’s progression first-hand has inspired Ethan to carve out his own path in the industry, aspiring to high-level roles in operations or project management.

Lessons Learned & Key Skills

One of Ethan’s biggest takeaways from his apprenticeship is that success requires dedication, discipline, and forward planning. He quickly learned the importance of accuracy when ordering materials, meeting deadlines, and ensuring smooth operations to avoid delays in large-scale projects. His role also demanded leadership skills, and he became more confident in taking the lead and making decisions on-site.

Ethan believes pride in your work is key.
“Not everyone pushes themselves to be the best, but that’s just how I am. I always want to improve.”

The Impact of Apprenticeships at Aptus

Ethan credits Aptus for investing in his development, providing all the necessary qualifications and rewarding hard work. He sees apprenticeships as crucial to the company’s success.

“The more skilled people we have, the more work we can take on and the more the company grows. Apprentices play a key role in that.”

Future Ambitions & Advice for Others

His advice to future apprentices?

  • Be punctual.
  • Always try harder than expected.
  • Stay open to learning from every experience.

He also stresses the importance of being a team player, sharing knowledge, and adapting to new challenges.

Final Thoughts

Looking ahead, Ethan is focused on continuous learning and career progression. His apprenticeship has provided him with the tools to lead, problem-solve, and grow in the industry—and he’s determined to go as far as he can.

“My long term goal is to progress into higher management as I become more experienced and competent in my current role.

“My plan has always been to learn about mains and service installations by doing it first, then using my experience and knowledge to help me in an office based role.”

“While my ultimate goal is senior-level management, I know it takes time and patience. Every step forward counts.”

Ethan’s story is a testament to the power of apprenticeships in shaping careers, developing leadership, and creating opportunities for long-term success.
