Lewis’ Journey from Apprentice to Water Design Specialist

Water Design As Laid 1

Lewis’ eight-year journey at Aptus highlights the incredible career progression opportunities available through apprenticeships.

Starting as an apprentice, Lewis has developed expertise in water design, mentored a team of multi-utility engineers, and is now expanding his skills into electrical design. Here’s how he built a successful career in utilities with Aptus.

Choosing an Apprenticeship Over A-Levels

At 17, Lewis was studying A-Levels but quickly realised that the traditional academic route wasn’t for him. He wanted to earn while learning and gain real-world experience. In February 2017, he joined Aptus’ Business Administration Apprenticeship, seeing it as the perfect entry point to develop transferable skills and explore career paths in the utilities industry.

Building Technical Expertise in Water Design

Lewis began his career in the Tendering Team, handling Point of Connection (POC) applications and gaining valuable industry insights. Over time, he developed a strong interest in Water Design, recognising its vast career potential.

“I was attracted to a career in water because it allows you to develop extensive technical knowledge and progress within the industry” explained Lewis.

Qualifications & On-Site Experience

After completing his apprenticeship, Lewis advanced to a Trainee Water Designer role and committed to further professional development. His key qualifications include:

✔ NVQ Level 3 in Water Network Design (2-year course, equivalent to two A-Levels)
✔ HNC in Civil Engineering (Completed in 2023, studied one day per week at Bolton College)
✔ On-Site Certifications: Water Shea, Water Hygiene, Manual Handling, First Aid, and worksite tickets

Lewis gained practical experience by working on-site, pressure testing, chlorinating, and observing multi-utility teams’ carry out branch connections. These hands-on experiences reinforced his understanding of design principles and allowed him to apply technical knowledge to real-world projects.

Stepping into Leadership & Expanding Expertise

As he progressed, Lewis took on a Team Leader role, mentoring trainee multi-utility design engineers. While he enjoyed mentoring, in 2024 he decided to broaden his skill set by developing electrical design expertise. This multi-disciplinary approach will strengthen his leadership abilities and prepare him for future management roles.

Career Aspirations & Industry Insights

Lewis is ambitious about advancing into senior management, drawing inspiration from leaders within the business. He’s passionate about driving improvements, increasing efficiency, and helping to shape Aptus’ future success.

Lewis commented that his time at Aptus Academy was also valuable, providing insights beyond his technical training. The workshops included sessions on financial planning and pensions – which he now appreciates as a long-term career advantage.

Lewis highlights some of the unhelpful perceptions of the construction industry:

“The common misconception is that the industry is dirty with menial jobs – but there are multiple careers to explore. Construction offers a place for all types of people, with diverse roles, from design and engineering to project management and leadership.”

A Message to Future Apprentices

Lewis’ journey showcases how an apprenticeship can be a stepping stone to a rewarding career. From a business administration apprentice to a skilled water designer with multiple qualifications, his experience demonstrates that construction offers endless opportunities for those willing to learn and grow.

If you’re considering an apprenticeship, Aptus provides the skills, training, and career development to help you succeed.
