Jessica joined Aptus on a Business Administration Apprenticeship in autumn 2024. Jessica, who already has a degree in commercial photography, saw the opportunity to advance her business skills and is supporting the estimating department while completing her training.
When considering my next steps, I was drawn to the idea of gaining first-hand experience in a professional setting while also working towards a qualification. An apprenticeship offered the perfect balance of practical learning and career development.
I discovered Aptus apprenticeships through a job search on Indeed, and after learning more about the company, I felt it was the right place for me. The friendly team and the quality of training stood out, creating a welcoming environment where I felt supported from day one.
My daily responsibilities are varied and keep me engaged. I spend time setting up tender schemes for jobs, requesting, filing, and revalidating POCs, and coordinating street lighting jobs. Each day brings something new, which keeps my role interesting.
One of the best parts of my apprenticeship is that no two days are the same. The inbox is different every day, bringing new tasks and challenges, which keeps my role fresh and exciting.
Throughout my apprenticeship, I’ve gained valuable skills that will benefit me in the long term. Professional communication, especially with external contacts, has been a key learning experience. Developing confidence in speaking with people both inside and outside the business has been incredibly useful.
This apprenticeship has given me a strong foundation in administration and will be beneficial for my career moving forward. The skills I’ve gained will help me apply for a variety of roles in the future, whether in administration or another area of interest.
After completing my apprenticeship, I plan to explore different job opportunities and would like to travel again, as it’s something I enjoyed before joining Aptus. Regardless of where my career takes me, the experience I’ve gained here will be invaluable.
Aptus Academy has been an important part of my development. Attending my first session early in my apprenticeship helped me understand different departments, their challenges, and how we collaborate to solve problems. It provided a great opportunity to connect with others and develop a deeper understanding of the business.
I’ve received great feedback from my colleagues, who appreciate that I’m always happy to help and that I respond to requests in a timely manner. Being a reliable and approachable team member is something I take pride in.
Before starting my apprenticeship, I assumed I might only be assisting with a few tasks rather than being fully involved. However, I quickly realised that I am a valued member of the team, contributing to meaningful work every day.
An apprenticeship is a fantastic way to gain hands-on experience, earn a qualification, and explore different areas within a business. I would highly recommend this path to anyone looking to kickstart their career while gaining practical, workplace skills.
